A generation sold for gloryโ€”and billed in blood

When Paul Bรคumer and his classmates enlisted in the Great War, they expected valor and victoryโ€”but found only mud, hunger, and the slow unmaking of themselves. In Erich Maria Remarqueโ€™s All Quiet on the Western Front, boys on the cusp of manhood move from patriotic classrooms to claustrophobic trenches, where daily survival replaces ideals.ย

Remarqueโ€™s first major novel follows young soldiers through harsh training to the front lines, where small mercies of comradeship and rare leaves of absence punctuate the endless patrols, raids, and bombardments. As routine brutality erodes body and soul, these young men learn to survive the trenches, but struggle to belong anywhere else.

This fierce, unflinching account of a generation swallowed alive by industrial war is told with urgent, heartbreaking humanity. Published in 1929, burned by the Nazis in 1933, and translated into nearly every language on earth, Remarqueโ€™s novel permanently changed how the world tells stories about war, and about what it costs to fight one.

โ€œWe are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men.โ€

About the Author

Erich Maria Remarque was a German soldier who turned the trenches into spare, devastating prose. Drafted at eighteen and wounded on the Western Front, he wrote from memory and moral urgency, replacing romanticism with the blunt facts of hunger, fear, and loss.ย

All Quiet on the Western Front transformed Remarque into an international voice against warโ€”as well as a target: the Nazi regime denounced and banned the book, staged public burnings, and forced Remarque into exile. Unable to reach him, the Nazis arrested and executed his sister Elfriede in 1943โ€”widely viewed among scholars as a proxy retaliation against Remarqueโ€”then billed their family for the execution costs. Read as a soldierโ€™s testimony and modern tragedy, Remarqueโ€™s landmark novel combines the economy of a military veteran with the compassion of a witness, a literary elegy meant to make readers feel what history books too often sanitize.
